Matt is a recurring character and survivor in The Last Ones.
Little to nothing is known about Matt's life before the outbreak other than he possibly lived in Summerlyn City and worked in the military and bomb disposal.
Not much is known about what happened to Matt during the early stages of the outbreak but he presumably survived in Summerlyn, or arrived in the city at a later date. He is known to have survived alongside James Jenson and Alvin.
Matt first appears as one of the survivors who assists Alexis Norton, the leader of the housing complex he recently has taken refuge in, on a mission outside the walls to track down Michael Lewis, a pathologist she went to college with. Outside the last known address of Michael's, Alexis prepares the armed group as they head inside. Jenson speaks up and declares it a waste of time. Matt remains silent as Jenson is over-ruled. After a while of searching unsuccessfully and after taking out a group of undead, Michael is found alive and agrees to go back to the complex with them.
Later on, Matt witnesses the death of Victoria Franklin at the hands of a resident who had recently turned. Matt is among thee stunned survivors who watch in shock as Alexis shoots both the zombified man and Victoria in the head, before coldly walking away.
Matt appears in the background in this episode as he attends a burial service for Victoria, stands guard as new survivors enter the community and gathers round with other complex residents as Alexis makes a speech, where she reveals the town will be named after Victoria.
A few days later, Alexis scolds Matt for not having enough people on watch. She expresses her disbelief that he was once in the military and demands that he set up more watch points. He apologies and leaves.
The night following Eli's death, Alexis's leadership is put under threat by Derrick, Jasmin, Jason and Tariq, all of whom raise their weapons at her. Derrick, who's in charge of the coup, demands Alexis leave the complex immediately. She refuses. Eventually, the situation is resolved and control is given back to Alexis, when Jenson, with Matt and Alvin by his side, shoots and kills Derrick. Alexis then makes it clear to the residents that whilst Victoria can be home to everybody, Victoria is hers.
The following day, Matt is seen on watch on one of the guard posts over-looking the outside of the walls.
Matt spots a community an hour away from Victoria during a run. He and Jenson later scout it out and spy on it.
When Drew Franklin arrives at the complex seeking refuge, Jenson heads to Alexis and lets her know that he is from Midway as he and Matt spotted him in the woods with Shiro several days before. Matt is present as Alexis has Drew arrested immediately thanks to Jenson's warning.
Two days later, a meeting is planned between Victoria and Midway to discuss the release of Drew. Some hours before, Alexis instructs Jenson to take Matt and scout Midway to see if they're preparing for a battle. After scouting the site, Jenson and Matt travel home where a drunken Sean, who is inside a pub they're passing by, overhears Jenson and Matt discuss Alexis's possible plan to execute Peter. The town is later overrun when Lorna lets undead free from Michael's lab and opens one of the gates. Matt helps fight off the threat.
After Lorna flees and the zombies are dealt with. Jenson, Coleman, and Matt congratulate each other for doing a good job of taking all the dead bodies outside and burning them.
The following day, Matt attends the joint funerals for the dead Victorians. Later, when Bernadette and Howie arrange a leadership vote, Matt votes for Alexis. Just then, Blaine and his people enter and he reveals a new way of life for the residents as Alexis is now head of a dictatorship.
Almost four months later, Catelyn gives birth to a son and a feast is thrown to celebrate, which Matt attends.
Matt is present when Alexis and Blaine make a deal with a new group who want refuge in Victoria.
When several residents from Victoria stage a break-out led by Bernadette, Matt joins Blaine and the other guards in trying to stop them. Matt arrests Zahra and Trudy who are standing by an injured Catelyn, as she was shot when they tried to escape.
Alexis orders for an upcoming meeting between between Midway and Noah Ashby's community to be intruded on by Blaine and Jenson. She instructs Blaine to take them hostage and demand Bernadette, Lorna, and the food they took from the warehouse to be handed over in order to be let go. However, Blaine takes has ulterior motives and murders Jenson to stop him from getting in the way. Matt is enraged and raises his weapon, but is outgunned and forced to back down. Blaine then proceeds to open fire on the groups, killing and wounding several of them. However, Jock ambushes them in response and kills Nate and Jason before being killed by Blaine. Blaine threatens Matt into going along with the fabricated story he will tell Alexis. Matt reluctantly does so.
Two days after the ambush, Blaine approaches Matt and tells him he thinks Alexis is suspicious about what really happened to Jenson. He makes it clear to Matt he needs to stop with the attitude towards him and the dirty looks. Matt begrudgingly agrees. Sometime after, Alexis calls Matt to her quarters and asks him to tell her the truth about what happened. Matt reveals Blaine killed Jenson and ambushed Henry's and Noah's groups from afar. Matt says Blaine knows nothing of loyalty, but he does, and Jenson was a good friend to him and if he has to die in order to do right by him, then so be it. Enraged, Alexis says that's not going to happen. She asks Matt for help. That night, Matt, under Alexis's orders, takes Blaine at gunpoint and banishes him from town.
When Blaine returns to help deal with a massive horde of undead that enters Victoria after a vengeful Donna drives through one of the gates and leads them in, Matt is enraged. He is further angered the following day when Alexis agrees to let Blaine handle things his way with the people of Midway and he kills Paul for trying to abandon town. When Blaine requests Matt build him a bomb, he adamantly refuses, and he refuses to reveal what he did with the bomb Eli planted that he disarmed months before. However, Reginald finds the bomb and reveals he will be able to put it back together, much to Matt's horror. He pleads with Blaine not to go through with it. Matt later watches when Blaine's people begin to train the civilians of Victoria on how to fight.
That night, after Blaine leaves to set up the bomb at Midway, Matt approaches Alexis and says it's not too late as he can still catch up to Blaine if he was to leave now. She admits she doesn't want Blaine to do it, but she has no choice, as she has to think of Victoria and the safety of Stephen. Matt suggests if he kills Blaine, they will be able to convince Midway to agree to a truce, but Alexis doesn't believe it's possible. Matt insists he can fix things, but Alexis says it's too late. Angry, Matt walks away as he tells Alexis she's not the woman Jenson said she was.
As Blaine prepares the residents of Victoria for an upcoming battle with survivors from Midway, Matt approaches Blaine and pleads with him to not get the innocent Victoria residents involved in his war. Blaine has no interest in hearing him out and tells him to go back inside and not get involved. He says if Matt steps outside again without permission a bullet's gonna fly. Matt leaves. During the battle, Matt actually makes Blaine's prediction come true as he steps outside and shoots Blaine in the back from afar as he was choking Shiro. This action saved Shiro and settled Blaine's fate, as he was then kicked to the ground and executed shortly after. As Alexis is taken prisoner and marched out of Victoria by Noah, she and Matt make eye contact as he stares out of his window. He turns her back on her and walks away.
It is unknown what Matt does after the battle as a large horde of zombies made its way into the fallen town.
